Upper Sacramento River
Current Report
- October
14. 2007 - Sunday
Fall is cooling off the
Upper Sac and the fish are starting to feed up for winter now. The
October Caddis should start hatching soon which really gets
the fish excited. The next month or so is very good fishing. Go
now..........

General Stream
Information
This is one of the top trout streams
in Nor Cal with easy access along Interstate 5 plus good restaurants
and lodging in Dunsmuir and Mount Shasta. Dunsmuir was originally
a busy railroad town but now it is more of a fishing village and
tourist stop. Ted Fay almost single
handedly put Dunsmuir on the map as far as fly fishing goes. He
tied his famous weighted Bombers, guided
fisherman and had a motel with a small fly shop too. One of his
proteges, Joe Kimsey, carried on the
tradition and now Bob Grace is taking
his place running one of the oldest fly shops in California, the
Ted Fay Fly Shop
in Dunsmuir.
The Upper Sacramento River
flows south out of Lake Siskiyou and shares the canyon most of the
way down to Lake Shasta with Interstate Highway 5 and the infamous
Southern Pacific Rail Road. There are dozen of turn-offs and many
great access points making the river very fishable for the general
public. Being able to walk the railroad tracks makes getting along
the river a much easier proposition.
Normally
June is the top month depending on the snow pack, run-off
and weather conditions. Then again in the Fall
it can be very good. The river is open all year now. We recommend
getting a good fly fishing guide for at least a day to get bonded
with the river.

Tackle
Most use a 9' #4 or 5
line rod with a floating line for this river. You can use a clear
slow sinking line in some of the deep hole down near Shasta Lake.
Have some fresh 9' 5x leaders for dries and some 7.5' 4x for nymphing.
Have some fresh matching 3x to 6x tippet.
