The Upper Owens River
twists for ~20 miles at 4,500 foot elevation mostly through private
ranches before flowing in Crowley Lake. From Big Springs down to
Alpers Owens River Ranch is only a mile of public water. Alpers
Ranch is about 2 miles of stream and with two lakes. After that
is the now privately owned Arcularius Ranch which has 5 miles of
stream. Below that is more public water that is 5 miles as the crow
flies to Crowley Lake but maybe twice that distance in twisting
stream miles.
This is all great trout
water with about 10,000 fish per mile. The Lower Owens from below
Crowley Lake downstream ~30 miles to Pleasant Valley Reservoir is
open year round with a minimum flow of 106 cfs. Access is off the
George Road. From Pleasant Valley Reservoir downstream is another
section that is open January 1 to September 30.
