River Information
Like our sister Klamath
River, the Rogue River runs hundreds of miles heading west across
southern Oregon and finally ending up at the Pacific Ocean at Gold
Beach.
This is a world famous
river with runs of summer-run adult Steelhead, Halfpounder Steelhead ,
big winter run Steelhead, spring and fall runs of King Salmon and
fall runs of Silver Salmon plus a spring run of American Shad. There
are probably Sea-run Cutthroat around as well.
The upper reaches have
resident Rainbow Trout as well. Early June is the Salmon Fly hatch
time on the 'Holy Water'.
In the Spring you have
runs of extremely fresh King Salmon (Springers) which are very hard
to catch on flies.
It has a very large run
of American Shad in the spring with May/June being prime time.
Summer Steelhead start
entering the river in July working their way up to the Medford area
for the fall fishing which is best in October.
In August/September you
have runs of large fresh King Salmon in the lower river. Some wade
now with Spey rods but the traditional way is from from an anchored
small boat/pram.
Silver Salmon/Cohos are
on a come back in the fall now too.
September is a good month
for Halfpounder Steelhead down in the lower river just like on the
Klamath River in California.

This river is the big
deal for Nor Cal anglers because it is a short 5 hour drive from
Sacramento to Medford.

You can access the lower
river and wade fish it from the road system down there.
The lower to middle river
is accessed by jet boat.
The middle to upper river
has some foot access but is mostly floated in drift boats.
The Fall is famous for
these multi-day drift boat float trips where you fish and staying
at a different river lodges every night.

This great river, like
the Klamath, with many different faces is one of the top fly fishing
rivers in the world.
