Mather Pond

November 17, 2007 - Saturday

Just had a report that they planted trout in Mather recently. This is a common practic in low elevation local ponds in the winter.

Spring is good on this little lake; April/May/June. It can weed over pretty much in the summer though.

Mather Pond Info

Mather Pond is very close to Sacramento being east on Highway 50 in Rancho Cordova at Mather Field. This is a Sacramento County Park with very nice facilities for the family too.

Season

I would say that April/May/June is the prime time here because it is a weedy lake and would be more difficult to fish after it gets grown over in summer.

Tackle

Fly rods from # 5 to # 8 weight will work well depending on the size flies you are throwing. We would mostly use a weight forward floating line here with all the weed growth in this small pond. Use a line that is 1 or 2 sizes larger than your rod calls for to cast wind resistant bass bugs. The water is not real clear so 7.5’ leaders from 0x to 3x will be good.

Flies

Top water flies and wooly buggers will usually be good here. Dahlberg Divers and Umpqua Swimming Frogs work well too.

Access

Fishing from shore is a little limited due to the heavy aquatic growth. Getting away from shore in a float tube, pontoon boat, kayak, canoe or small light car-top boat is very important.
