Manzanita Lake

Current Report -July 13, 2007 - Friday

This is a very good fly fishing lake with enough depth and at a high elevation to stay fairly cool all summer.  Look for some callibaetis mayflies in the afternoons. Cast small nymphs to cruising fish along the shore.

Lake Information

This small 53 acre lakes is at 5850 feet elevation so it gets started a little later than some. Fishing is good at ice out and then again from about mid-June to mid-July. The lake is barbless and catch and release only with a very good population of wild Rainbow and Brown trout. No motors are allowed. It is famous for it's mid-day Callibaetis mayfly hatches and the 'motor-boat caddis' in the evenings. You can edge wade the lake stalking cruiser. a float tube, pontoon boat, canoe or pram is the ticket for fishing the hatches. It is feed by Manzanita Creek which also keeps it fresh all summer. There is also a very large campground at the lake with 179 sites. The park has a small store for basic supplies very near by too.
