Lewiston Lake

LAKE INFO

This is a very famous fly fishing lake with good mayfly, caddis and midge hatches. At 1900 feet this lake can be fished year round. You can wade a little but a float tube, pontoon boat or outboard powered skiff is best. It has some really large hot Rainbow trout that can spool you if you are not careful. It has some big smart Brown trout as well. It is not an easy lake to fish with pretty smart fish but it can be very rewarding for those who put in there time. It could be called a 'guides lake' because you will find them there on their days off. The lake is planted with Rainbows, Browns and Brookies so there are 12 to 14 inches for easier catching. There is a constant current in the lake so it is like fishing a giant spring creek. Callibaetis mayflies (12-16) and small midges (18-22) are the main hatches.

Construction on Lewiston Dam began in 1957 and was completed in 1961. The reservoir provides after bay storage from releases from the Trinity Power Plant. It also serves to direct Trinity River water into the 11 mile long Clear Creek Tunnel for diversion to Whiskeytown Lake and power plant. It is also used to control releases for downstream fisheries needs. The reservoir is 7 miles long, with a 15 mile shoreline. You won't see any annoying jet skiers or water skiers on Lewiston, since the speed limit for boating is 10 miles per hour.
