Fuller Lake Information

This is one of the most popular fly fishing lakes in Nor Cal because it is very close to Sacramento and the Bay Area. It is stocked with planters but also has a population of wild trout as well. It has water coming into the north end from Bowman Lake via an under ground pipe which helps keep it fresh throughout the summer. The stream bottom follows the north-east side of the lake. The north-east corner also has a couple shallow flats that drop off into deep water with large tree stumps. The south-east corner of the lake drops off to some seep water. The south-west has some nice flats that drop off into some nice deeper water which flows to the dam. The first boat launch is located at the south-west corner at the west side of the dam. The north-west corner more medium depth water, 10' or so. Most of the west side is somewhat shallow and the majority of the east side drops off quickly.

There are only two main access points to the lake. The first parking lot and boat launch(float tube launch) has a public restroom(nice pit toilet) and is located there near the dam. This parking area is the first thing you see once you arrive. The other boat launch is part of a nice day use area located at the north-west side of the lake. This day use area(DUA) has more parking, two bathrooms, picnic benches, barbeques and two bathrooms. The boat launch is also paved and accessible by vehicles unlike the first parking area. The entrance to the north-west day use area is hard to find. The dirt road to the DUA is on the right side of main road and hard to see. After you pass the first parking area it is about 3/4 mile up the main road

CFFU outing info:

From Eastbound I-80, take the Hwy 20 exit (Grass Valley/Nevada City), go 4.5 miles and turn right on Bowman Lake Road. Go 3.5 miles to Fuller Lake on your right. There is an area suitable for launching at the dam (when you first see the lake). We usually meet at the picnic area at the other end of the lake: continue (from the dam) on Bowman Lake Road for about 1.5 miles. Turn right at the intersection with the water project sign and a sign for the Grass Valley Rod and Gun club, it is almost a 180 degree turn onto a dirt road. Proceed down the road for about 0.5 miles to the parking area. There is a $5 fee for using this area plus $2 for launching a boat. Asphalt parking lot and a nice picnic ground.

Tackle

Most use 9' or longer rods in #4-6 weight. Have a weight forward floating line, a clear slow sinking line and then something faster type 3-4 sinking for late summer when the fish go deep. Some anchor where the water flows in and use a sinktip to swing a small #16/18 dark nymphs. It is nice to have a float tube, pontoon boat or any small fishing boat to fish this lake properly.
