Fly fishers start heading
for Eagle as it cools in October. November is the top month for
fly fishing this lake.December can be good too but cold. Fish reports
are pretty much useless so I would just go before it closes on December
31.

Lake Information
Eagle Lake has the largest
average size Rainbow trout caught on flies in a lake in Nor Cal.
You can wade, use a float tube or pontoon boat or fish from a 12-18
foot outboard powered skiff. October, November and December are
the top months for fly fishing this lake. November is the target
time. As it gets cold the fish move into the shallows and along
the shore to feed on scuds.

Fishing Tips
Jay Fair is the most famous
guide on Eagle Lake and this is some of what he will tell you about
fishing this lake:
1) Jay likes to get out
there real early in the morning for the big fish.
2) He doesn't like Blue
Bird weather for big fish. He like clouds and wind.
3) You can't move your
fly too slow.
4) He like to wade for
big fish.
5) He uses 12' of leader
to 3x tippet.
6) He uses a floating
line if the wind is not blowing.
7) He uses a 'true' intermediate
line if the wind is blowing. (they are not clear)
8)He uses a lightly weighted
fly. Mostly his 'wiggle Nymph' which is like a small wooly bugger.
.
**
If he takes you trolling it means he gave up on your ability to
fly fish and is trying to save the day.

Tackle
Most use a 9' - 9'6" #5 -6 line
outfit on this lake. Have a weight forward floating line, a true
Intermediate line (not clear) and a clear slow sinking line.
Have some fresh
9' 2x leaders and some spools of 2x, 3x and 4x FC tippet material.
Small rusty brown and
olive wooly buggers are very popular.Jay Fair's new 'wiggle nymph'
is pretty hot too.
