This versatile tube fly and bubble head were developed based on
big game lures. You can make various combinations; single or double
streamer, add the bubble head and you have a single or double length
popper. The head is reversible, bullet shape forward or flat surface
forward for additional bubble and pop. Use single-hook or double-hook
rig on these tubes. The hook may be allowed to swing free or, if
a set hook is preferred, the hook can be pushed into the soft tubing
at any angle.
Some years ago now, a good friend of mine, Del Brown, while fishing
for striped bass in the Boston area was introduced to Jack Gartside's
Gurgler. The name Del Brown should be no surprise to you if you
have read anything about fishing for permit. Del not only designed
the famous Merkin crab pattern but, just this past year , 2002,
Del caught and released his 500th Permit. Anyhow, upon returning
to California, Del was overwhelmed with several aspects of the Gurgler.
First, the erratic action: not loud and splashy, like a popper,
or a subdued waking action, like a slider - something in between.
Second, the bug's simplistic design was easy to tye. And third,
he could cast the bug much further with much less effort than many
types of big, wind-resistant poppers.
Like most fly-fishing guides at the South Fork Lodge in Swan Valley,
ID, Zach Mertens used to spend the early mornings of summers ’93
and ’94 perusing the fly bins, choosing the best flies for the working
day ahead. He noticed that most of the flies were made overseas
in Asia. The locations reminded him of scenes from his international
childhood, spent traveling in the wake of his father’s career in
commercial agriculture. "Philippines" reminded him of preschool
games on a pineapple plantation on the island of Mindanao. "China"
made him wince a bit as he thought of two years of language lessons
taught by a non-smiling master in southeast China. "Hong Kong" was
a relative paradise for high school, but light years away from the
paradise of clear waters, powder snows, trophy trout rivers and
mountain vistas that marked his current horizons in the Rockies.
An old angler happens by and one of the young guys asks him to settle
the debate. "Which trout fly do you think is most effective," he
asks the old man, " the Adams or the Wulff?"
The older man pauses for a moment then replies, "The most effective
trout fly is whichever one the angler believes in most strongly."
