One Day Saltwater School

Chico Fernandez
This class is taught by Chico Fernandez and
will encompass the following topics:
- Rods, reels, and fly line selection, and how they are designed
and manufactured.
- Leader formulas for the salt.
- Leader logic in applying knots.
- Customizing fly lines by cutting them a bit short up front to
splicing running line behind for extra long and easy cast.
- Fighting fish, rod angles, angles to the fish, etc.
- The use of lighter rods in the salt today from big tarpon to
bones and redfish.
One can land a 100 pound
tarpon in a short time, often in 15 minutes or less in the flats.
Lots of ladies doing it these days. And the techniques apply to
any fish in shallow water and any fly rod, even a five
weight.
Then casting, of course.
From basics to distance. And some tricks for accuracy to a moving
fish in the flats. And line management in the front deck of a skiff
and wading in the flats with the line on the water, although I may
do this during my casting demonstration.
Fly selection and why,
and mostly, how to fish the fly once you've made a good cast; that
is, how to talk them into taking the fly. Finally we'll talk about
travel. Not so much where to go, as to what to bring and why.
